choosing a name can me tough. even before i was ever pregnant dear hubby and i had decided on a girl name. thus far, we have had to decide upon two boys and with each pregnancy had to really think about the names we wanted for each little dude. our kids have simple finnish names, chosen with the hope that they would be easy enough for english speakers to pronounce and remember. i think we succeeded. but man, boy names a tough!
we still have our girl name on file, and i’m not not quite ready to reveal it, just in case we actually need it one day.Â
and what about the world of nicknames. my dear friend named me lola over a decade ago when we were working at lush together. it stuck. i attached the mama to it. then this morning, i decided to google mama lola and this is who i found.
this woman, another mama lola, is from port-au-prince, haiti and is a famous voodoo priestess living and practising in brooklyn, NY! how completely random and totally cool! doesn’t she just exude a wisdom only gained by living an interesting life. a drink in one hand, a smoke in the other and rings on each finger!Â
fabulous!
*******
how did you choose your kids’ names?
how did you get your nickname?

Names are SO hard! We didn’t name our kids till after they were born, though we’d had lots of names on the list to play with. The names we chose were not on the list, but rather ones we thrown out. We did some closed eye guided meditation ending with a, “then you turn around to pick up your little boy and say, “Hi ____”. It was fun and their names suit them well. It would be a good thing for me to write up for them (ha – the list of good things I have yet to begin!)
that’s so brave, but it love it though!
You are Mama Lola through and through but this picture killed me! Killed me! I’m dying laughing!!!! I love her. I love her.
i know, awesome, right?
Why am I anonymous?
I’ve never been very good at naming children or pets. I’ve still not named my oldest son! He’s 33. I call him by his father’s name!!!!
For my first baby I checked baby name lists for one that grabbed me. A little girl name stuck out, but I was unsure about a boy name. I ended up having a baby girl. When I was pregnant the next time the only name that came to me was a little boy name. Guess what I had a boy,so it worked out. For pets I google pet names.
Great post!!

that’s an awesome name story, kathy!
You are Finnish? We will have to account for language too when it comes time for us to choose a name. It would have to be one that we like in both languages, English and French; or if there is no English equivalent, one that is easily pronounced in English. That narrows it down a lot!
And awesome pic!
yes, finnish blondie over here. born and raised until i was about 12. it was important for me to keep the finnish heritage in the kids’ names. luckily, dear hubby agreed. i love their names! they’re easy, short and suit them to a T.
kaya – a bob marley song and a hopi indian name meaning ‘wise child’
geneva rose – family names
liam – the boy name that hubby had on file since he was young
harrison – the beatle
heinz – may grandfather’s name/traditional german name
love it suzy!
Boy names ARE hard! It doesn’t help to be a teacher, in my case.
Funnily enough, I read a book entitled Mama Lola for a religion class in university, all about that same lady pictured above. Fascinating book, actually! But somehow, I still agree the names suits you too.
do you guys have names for your wee bean?
