NORWEX!!!

May 6, 2012 by mama lola

it’s time to think about the kind of foot print you’re leaving on our earth.

i am hosting a NORWEX party tomorrow (sunday may 6). my friend terri-ann is the norwex queen and will come and show us how and where to use all the fabulous products they have. it’s going to be great fun; i will prepare some delicious treats, brew some yummy coffee and wait to see who shows up at my door!

if you are interested in the products check it out online or email me (lolas_mail@yahoo.ca) and i can connect you with the lovely, terri-ann. she’s amazing!

i’m super excited to chat with terri-ann, as i have always used environmentally friendly cleaners, but with the kids i am always looking for better products. norwex also has great personal care items, like shea butter, which i am definitely going to buy and use on bear’s eczema. i’m also interested in finding some nice cleaning cloths and am curious about the kids line of products.

i am a brain tumour survivor.

May 5, 2012 by mama lola

it is really hard for me to admit that. that i am a brain tumour survivor.

today was the brain tumour foundation of canada‘s walk/ run in our town. it was an incredibly emotional morning for me, as i met other survivors and people living with various brain tumours. the event was lovely and had such a relaxed mood, that the down side of the reason we had all come together was easy to forget.

[ cheerleaders providing entertainment! ]

i am realizing that my tumour didn’t have to be so scary, but because i was pregnant with lion, my situation was made that much worse. because we had to wait to remove the tumour until after lion’s birth, it provided it time to grow bigger and cause lots more terrible headaches, which consequently meant i was popping more prescription pain medication, which in turn meant i felt tremendous guilt and fear.

i had all these emotions going around in my mind. i actually thought that i was going to lose my life. in fact, i couldn’t remember what life was like before this diagnosis and before these headaches that caused me so much pain. i have never felt anything like it before. there was even a time during all of this that i considered looking into life insurance (read more here) because i wanted to make sure that my family had financial security should anything happen to me. yes, i was that scared that i wouldn’t make it through my treatment and pregnancy. i would be lying if i said that i wasn’t scared for my life.

if only my tumour had made itself known before or after my pregnancy with lion, i don’t think i would get so emotional about it all.

in case you are new to my blog, for a birth stories go here. but what happened was, lion was born via scheduled c-section and i was under a general anesthetic, so i was not awake for his birth and dear hubby had to wait outside the operating room. they were supposed to put me under and cut me open, so that lion wouldn’t get much of the anesthesia, but they screwed up. i was under for almost 20 minutes before lion was born, because the placenta was right at the incision site, which they were not expecting and i lost a lot of blood. lion lost all vitals at birth and was rushed off to be resuscitated, while i lay there completely out of it and dear hubby stood outside. then, a red emergency light turned on and an alarm went off outside the door to my operating room and that’s how dear hubby knew something awful had happened.

after five days at the specialty, fancy hospital lion was transferred to our local hospital, where he stayed another few nights before coming home.

i couldn’t have a vaginal birth, because they thought the pressure of pushing the baby out could cause my tumour to explode. and, i had to be put under, because the epidural (which is the norm for a c-section) is placed into your spine, the specialists were concerned that too might cause the pressure to change in my head causing the tumour to explode and kill me instantly.

and here we are today, healthy and happy.
many brain tumour patients are in fact dealing with cancer and i feel like a bit of a fraud with non-malignant macro adenoma. but still, i am so grateful i have found this group of brain tumour survivors and will start attending their support groups monthly. i wish so much, that i had been aware of their existence back when we were dealing with the tumour stuff daily. perhaps, my story can of help to someone else, maybe even another pregnant mama.

[ there were only 16 of us in blue. blue shirts meant we had survived or were living with a brain tumour.]

if you would like to make a donation click here click here, the deadline is july 31, 2012.

i will leave you with this to think about…
“in canada 27 people receive a brain tumour diagnosis a day.”

[ we, survivors walked together before joining our friends and families for the main portion. i cried and cried, as i was held by other survivors. i realized for the first time ever that i was not alone. we were all handed roses.]

artful PLAY and other stuff!

May 5, 2012 by mama lola

this morning we headed directly to the local children’s art factory.

it’s a wonderful little place where the kids get to do all sorts of art projects, make a mess and now worry about the mess they are making. the kids had an amazing time!

then it was off to the park to soak in the warm temperatures, snack and PLAY HARD!
[last time i uploaded a movie there were some technical difficulties, so there may be some again. sorry. i will try to deal with them promptly! ]

******
also, as many of you know i am looking for sponsors for the brain tumour foundation of canada. there is a walk/ run tomorrow morning to raise money for research, education and support for brain tumours.
days before christmas 2009, i was told i had a tumour (a macro adenoma) on my pituitary gland. it coincided with my pregnancy with lion, so it was a very scary and difficult time for us. i was labelled high risk and was supervised closely by a team of OB’s at a fancy hospital out of town. lion’s birth was a mess and scary and you can read more about that here. as for me, my tumour was removed in the fall of 2010. bear almost three and lion was about four months, so it was very stressful for all of us.

[ two days post surgery. they went up my nose to remove the tumour, hence the bandage ]

i am still being monitored by a team of neurologists and endochronologists, getting MRI’s done about every six months and bloodwork done then too. so far, things look good, but i go back in july for another follow-up appointment. it is likely the tumour will return, but hopefully not for a long time!

******
i’m ending on sadder note. MCA (adam yauch) has passed away at the age of 47. he was a member of the beastie boys, who i have LOVED for decades, now! i’ve only seen them live twice, but both shows were so amazing.

[ L to R, mike D, adRock and MCA ]

g’night world.
g’night moon.
peace.
love.

the firetruck miracle.

May 3, 2012 by mama lola

it isn’t every day you look out the window and see a firetruck parked right in front of your house. but, that’s exactly the miracle that presented itself to us on wednesday morning, while visiting friends in the big city.

we stepped outside and there it was, a HUGE shiny red truck, with a very kind and smiley firefighter standing around outside. there was some disturbance up a few houses up, but nothing scary.

when the firefighters were done with the disturbance, they let the kids sit in the truck. my bear was too scared to hop in, but he enjoyed the view from outside. even tiny two month old, babyB got to sit in the rig!

 [BYE BYE! ]

at our house, since our trip to NYC last fall, playing firemascape has become a favourite. bear was amazed at all of the fire escapes in the big apple and made a game about it. now, lion loves to play too and they run around with firefighter helmets and various toys pretending to hose down a building engulfed in flames!

have a wonderful thursday!
look at my beautiful friend and her neighbours sweetest little guy, babyB.

see you tomorrow!

chair re*do.

May 1, 2012 by mama lola

welcome to the first of thirty one posts in may!

we have a beautiful dining set that my grandmother shipped over from glasgow, scotland at least a decade before the second world war started, when she immigrated to canada with my grandfather. it’s a small simple table with built in leafs that can be extended when needed, four chairs and a matching sideboard. i never knew my dad’s mother and cherish this set very much. it’s a way for me to feel close to her and my scottish roots. my dad has many fond and messy memories of eating at this table during his childhood.

but, i’ve been lazy at taking care of the chairs. they have cloth seats that are yucky and dirty from the endless messes the kids have spilled while eating on them. i’m always mortified when people come over and sit on them, but i’ve always intended to re-do them.

i thought about getting some funky oil cloth and using that, but after a quick pinterest  and web search, i spontaneously decided to use a cheap vinyl table cloth i had purchased this spring. the colour is not my favourite for the chairs, but it will do for now.

this and this is basically what i did.

pull tight and be ready to staple…

have lotsa staples on hand…

and a bright, clean chair for sitting on!

now when the kiddo’s make a mess, i can just wipe down the chairs with a damp cloth and not have to worry about it!
woohoooo!

see ya tomorrow!

beer & nachos.

April 30, 2012 by mama lola

saturday night, was girl’s night.
it felt nice to go out. i took the bus downtown with a friend. the bus, ha! i was (of course) standing around at the stop early, so i took some pictures.

it was a lovely evening of drinks and munchies and great conversation. one of the MAMA’s from my baby group is moving far, far away so we had little gathering to catch up before she moves on out.

we’ve known each other for four years come this june. that’s when our group formed; when we were all first time mama’s looking for other first time mama’s for friendship and support. since then, everyone in our group of 18 has had or is in the process of baking a second child.

on the bus home…
looking pretty good after three tom collins. oh, what a nostalgic drink!

the rest of the weekend was great. dear hubby really buckled down and tackled the long to do list on the fridge. i went to that women’s clothing exchange and came home with some beautiful things. i’ve also been busy cleaning out the house and selling, selling, selling much of our stuff. it’s time to pass things along to people who will use them and de-clutter our basement. feels good!

and, don’t forget to check in daily starting tuesday as i will be posting every day for may NaBloPoMo!

friday, friday.

April 27, 2012 by mama lola

we have a fun weekend planned.

on saturday, a few friends and i are heading to the local women’s clothing swap without kids or dear husbands! last year i was so excited about the event and this year i am even more thrilled to be going. i have a lots of old clothes to contribute and am excited to revamp my wardrobe for a measly $8! last weekend was the kids clothing exchange and i unloaded a bunch of stuff the boys have outgrown and came home with a bursting with goodies.

i love these community events, because they bring people together and are so good for the spirit AND the environment!

[ i love this picture of bear.]
dear hubby is going to get his fancy new weed wacker out and wack some weeds with it! our lawn is over due for a trim and a cut, so let’s hope for sun. i am also hoping to get my fingers dirty with some beautiful fresh soil and a forsythia bush. i am going to go and buy myself one and plant it, since nobody else will!

saw these marimekko cons on pinterest and want them! they’re on sale at converse.com. mother’s day is coming up, soon, so i’m going to treat myself. or maybe dear hubby will read this and treat me!

i have signed up to do NaBloPoMo for may, which means i will be blogging daily again starting tuesday. i kinda like the added pressure to write! plus, i think there’ll be lots of fun things to write about, especially since the theme will be PLAY.

MERRY WEEKEND EVERYONE!

fundraising for a vacation.

April 26, 2012 by mama lola

i have decided to do some spring cleaning in the basement and am purging, purging, purging! we are over flowing with kids clothes, toys that the kids have out grown and stuff that has been stashed downstairs for too long. i decided i could use this as a way to start making some extra money, so i took to LeoList and have placed lots of kids items up for sale. after i sold a few pieces, i decided to keep the money in a jar and put those dollars towards our family vacation this year. i’m not getting as many hits as i would have hoped; my one friend keeps answering the ads, but i don’t think she realizes it’s me until i respond back to her! so funny!

*****
here’s a family picture of us from dear hubby’s birthday, last sunday.

i’ve taken a bit of a break from here. dear hubby and lion have been sick, and lion has been teething and we had a busy weekend and now this week i all of a sudden have a million things to do. that’s life i guess! i’ll be back later this week with details of may’s NaBloPoMo.

a wild birthday weekend!

April 22, 2012 by mama lola

saturday was a wild, bow-la-li-cious 5th birthday party for our friend wild, wild west. check out the slideshow i made of the good times had by all at the always fabulous bowlarama!
(music: duran duran, “wild boys”, 1984)

{* there seems to be some audio problems that dear hubby is trying to resolve!
sounds fine to us, please let me know if you have any problems. thx.}

today, we had a small family party for dear hubby for his 36th birthday. we made a delish, three layer ice cream cake (thanks for the inspiration dear sun) and some afternoon nibblies.

i bought dear hubby a weed wacker as a way to keep the romance alive in our relationship! seriously though, this way he can keep up on yard work and hopefully i won’t get as frustrated with him!

always looking for ways to help my marriage!

[ birthday ring. ]

a peaceful evening now. two little boys tucked in bed, one already in dreamland, the other almost there, so it’s time to sit back and relax. birthdays are fun, but exhausting as well. a family portrait was attempted tonight too, we’ll see if i can post one up tomorrow!

HAPPY EARTH DAY!
g’night moon.
