why is every day not mother’s day?

May 13, 2012 by mama lola

well, it is mother’s day weekend!
today we celebrated motherhood and grandmotherhood with dear hubby’s mama. she took the boys to the park for some quality alone time, but we caught up with them after spening over $100 at the local bookstore! (dear hubby spent the gift card he received for x-mas!) and then we ordered some yummy indian food for dinner.

it was a glorious day filled with lots of laughter and smiles. i realize that sounds cheesy and cliche, but really, we all had a genuinely wonderful day together. sure, the kids hit their usual low blood-sugar points after playing hard for hours at the park, but they got over it once their bellies were full of aloo gobi and samosas and continued playing nicely on grandma’s floor.

fine tuning the family pictures is hard. there is always someone looking away from the camera!

grandma looking so happy with her boys!

tomorrow we’re off on an adventure with my mom.

am i enough? am i doing enough?

May 10, 2012 by mama lola

[ i didn’t post anything yesterday. it was a busy and when i got home after zumba and yoga at 9:45pm, i could feel my body getting sick. instead of blogging, dear hubby and i watched thirtysomething while i sipped hot tea.]

so, often i wonder if i am balanced in my mothering with the boys. it is clear that each child has experienced a very, very different first couple of years, which i think, is neither here not there. but, my concern is, have i given enough of myself to my youngest, lion. we attachment parent and try to be mindful about the choices we make as parents, not just following the norm. although, lion and i co-slept longer and he’s still nursing (only about once or twice a day) it feels as though my bond with him is not as tight as the one bear and i had at that stage.

is it because with bear i only had one child pour myself into?
now i have two, and with my health issues i have perhaps, become more selfish?
does any of this matter? both of my little dudes is healthy and developing wonderfully.

for the first two years of bear’s life it was just the two of us during the day, with lots of extra time with dear hubby as well, since he was a student back then. the three of us would get into all sorts of adventures and fun things. now with two, i feel like the flexibility of one kid is long gone, but as the kids get older they need more predictability and consistency. spontaneous adventures are hard to figure out these days, also because dear hubby works at a regular nine to five job.

when i am at home with just the boys, they play together and leave me out of it. they only need me when a disagreement arises (which is often) and if the other kid is away at preschool or napping and the one ho is alone does not want to be alone. they play nicely together and obviously enjoy each other’s company a lot, which is amazing to watch. my heart melts hen i see them busy with a game of sorts.

but when bear was this age, he and i would colour together, do all sorts of sticker creations and other little projects, but i worry that lion is not getting that same focused time with me. as a stay at home mama, it feels as though there is an endless river of hours to spend with ones kids, but truth be told, there really aren’t. sometimes it feels like, because i am an at home mama, i should be doing more with the kids (whatever more means), but we constrained by naps, meal times and the two outside of the home activities bear participates in.

how do i know i am enough?
how do i know that what i am doing is enough?

i would love to hear from you and how you handle loving, caring, and nurturing more than one child.

playing by the rules.

May 8, 2012 by mama lola

for bear’s 4th birthday he got a super fun game from his super fun friend. it’s a cat in the hat game that is all about doing silly things with your body, in a dr.seuss kinda way. bear LOVES this game, but seriously struggles with following the rules. i get it, the kid is 4, but still… c’mon he’s ALREADY 4! i remember playing games with my parents or friends, and following the rules in order for the game to flow nicely. the rules weren’t the fun part and often hindered me from winning, but they’re there for a reason. right?

today bear was playing this new cat in the hat game with dear hubby and i heard him at one point say in a huff “no. i don’t like the rules. i am going to do it my way”.
oh, dear!!!
he gets completely bent out of shape if he’s not the first at things; the first one at the dinner table, the first one upstairs for washing hands and so on. he also struggles with not winning or being the best at something. the wee fella gets so frustrated with himself quickly saying “no, i will never learn to do up the zipper” and then he just does it the next day. but, as his mama it’s difficult to listen to his attitude and negativity; i think he’s a genius (as is his wee brother) and already capable of so much.
are all kids like this?

[i haven’t taken any pictures thanks to my pathetic finger.]

i will leave you with this sweet face.

this is mark ruffalo, a hollywood dude who also had a brain tumour. his was different from mine, but he had his removed via surgery and he too is fine now!

*remember, if you are still interested in donating to the brain tumour foundation of canada’s SPRING SPRINT, you have until july 31, 2012. so far i have raised $485 and would love to at least reach $500!

i am content.

May 6, 2012 by mama lola

i feel very content right at this moment.

this weekend was one that was filled with emotion, laughter, friends and family, and sun!

i have been able to release some of the stress related to my tumour, that i guess i continue to carry. the walk on saturday, provided dear hubby and i with an opportunity to re-visit some of those emotions and talk about things. it was easier to talk, because we aren’t in the mess of things and have had a lot of time to reflect and move on.

today i hosted my NORWEX party, which was such fun. if i invited you and you didn’t come, make sure3 you come next time. terri-ann did some amazing product presentations and not just blabbing about the stuff, but she took a fist full of vaseline and smeared it on a window and then cleaned it off in like a second. it was amazing. she also cleaned my oven without any toxic stink or much effort. it was incredible!

i have that feeling of peace and calm and contentment in my core. life feels like it’s moving the way i have yearned it to for so long. it has been too long since we’ve been able to just enjoy life, but here we are. the kids are thriving; bear’s eczema seems to be getting better and lion is turning into a chattering wee fella. dear hubby’s job is going well and keeps him busy, but not overly stressed or away from home like other jobs have in the past.

looking forward to summer…

here’s hoping the upcoming week is a good one!
see ya tomorrow!

i am a brain tumour survivor.

May 5, 2012 by mama lola

it is really hard for me to admit that. that i am a brain tumour survivor.

today was the brain tumour foundation of canada‘s walk/ run in our town. it was an incredibly emotional morning for me, as i met other survivors and people living with various brain tumours. the event was lovely and had such a relaxed mood, that the down side of the reason we had all come together was easy to forget.

[ cheerleaders providing entertainment! ]

i am realizing that my tumour didn’t have to be so scary, but because i was pregnant with lion, my situation was made that much worse. because we had to wait to remove the tumour until after lion’s birth, it provided it time to grow bigger and cause lots more terrible headaches, which consequently meant i was popping more prescription pain medication, which in turn meant i felt tremendous guilt and fear.

i had all these emotions going around in my mind. i actually thought that i was going to lose my life. in fact, i couldn’t remember what life was like before this diagnosis and before these headaches that caused me so much pain. i have never felt anything like it before. there was even a time during all of this that i considered looking into life insurance (read more here) because i wanted to make sure that my family had financial security should anything happen to me. yes, i was that scared that i wouldn’t make it through my treatment and pregnancy. i would be lying if i said that i wasn’t scared for my life.

if only my tumour had made itself known before or after my pregnancy with lion, i don’t think i would get so emotional about it all.

in case you are new to my blog, for a birth stories go here. but what happened was, lion was born via scheduled c-section and i was under a general anesthetic, so i was not awake for his birth and dear hubby had to wait outside the operating room. they were supposed to put me under and cut me open, so that lion wouldn’t get much of the anesthesia, but they screwed up. i was under for almost 20 minutes before lion was born, because the placenta was right at the incision site, which they were not expecting and i lost a lot of blood. lion lost all vitals at birth and was rushed off to be resuscitated, while i lay there completely out of it and dear hubby stood outside. then, a red emergency light turned on and an alarm went off outside the door to my operating room and that’s how dear hubby knew something awful had happened.

after five days at the specialty, fancy hospital lion was transferred to our local hospital, where he stayed another few nights before coming home.

i couldn’t have a vaginal birth, because they thought the pressure of pushing the baby out could cause my tumour to explode. and, i had to be put under, because the epidural (which is the norm for a c-section) is placed into your spine, the specialists were concerned that too might cause the pressure to change in my head causing the tumour to explode and kill me instantly.

and here we are today, healthy and happy.
many brain tumour patients are in fact dealing with cancer and i feel like a bit of a fraud with non-malignant macro adenoma. but still, i am so grateful i have found this group of brain tumour survivors and will start attending their support groups monthly. i wish so much, that i had been aware of their existence back when we were dealing with the tumour stuff daily. perhaps, my story can of help to someone else, maybe even another pregnant mama.

[ there were only 16 of us in blue. blue shirts meant we had survived or were living with a brain tumour.]

if you would like to make a donation click here click here, the deadline is july 31, 2012.

i will leave you with this to think about…
“in canada 27 people receive a brain tumour diagnosis a day.”

[ we, survivors walked together before joining our friends and families for the main portion. i cried and cried, as i was held by other survivors. i realized for the first time ever that i was not alone. we were all handed roses.]

the firetruck miracle.

May 3, 2012 by mama lola

it isn’t every day you look out the window and see a firetruck parked right in front of your house. but, that’s exactly the miracle that presented itself to us on wednesday morning, while visiting friends in the big city.

we stepped outside and there it was, a HUGE shiny red truck, with a very kind and smiley firefighter standing around outside. there was some disturbance up a few houses up, but nothing scary.

when the firefighters were done with the disturbance, they let the kids sit in the truck. my bear was too scared to hop in, but he enjoyed the view from outside. even tiny two month old, babyB got to sit in the rig!

 [BYE BYE! ]

at our house, since our trip to NYC last fall, playing firemascape has become a favourite. bear was amazed at all of the fire escapes in the big apple and made a game about it. now, lion loves to play too and they run around with firefighter helmets and various toys pretending to hose down a building engulfed in flames!

have a wonderful thursday!
look at my beautiful friend and her neighbours sweetest little guy, babyB.

see you tomorrow!

a family date night.

April 21, 2012 by mama lola

instead of just going out with just dear hubby for friday night date night, i was picked up after my hair appointment and taken out by all three of my guys! we went to a wonderful local joint that has lots of vegan friendly menu options, which are perfect for bear with his egg intolerance and me, as i am still on my cleanse.

the food was taking a while so it was time for phone games!

we sat by the window so that the boys could stare at the train station across the road.

there was a promise to go over after dinner.

oh, what fun! it was windy and the temperature was dropping but the kids loved waiting for and then seeing the train.

a cheap date. but, certainly one of the best i’ve had in a while.

****
this weekend is a bit of a birthday extravaganza for us. tomorrow we’re heading to the big city to celebrate the fifth birthday of wild, wild wes! it’s going to be a bowling party and the kids are going to love it. hopefully i can get some good pictures of the kids in action!

then, sunday is my dear hubby’s birthday. we have family coming over for some treats and fun in the afternoon. bear is so excited for dad’s birthday and already gave away his surprise card! haha! birthday’s are just too exciting for the guy and he can’t control his enthusiasm!

have a wonderful weekend everyone!
joy!

dinner time BULL.

April 18, 2012 by mama lola

today is a sick day. lion had a fever, bad cough and lotsa boogers! we stayed in.

every night at dinner it’s the same thing. i make dinner, we sit down at the table to eat and then the bull$hit begins. dear hubby and i sound like skipping cd’s, repeating ourselves a million times with statements like “sit down and eat your dinner”, “stop putting your fork in your glass”, “stop touching your brother” just to name a few.

it makes dinner difficult and unpleasant, in fact. the nonsense is always the same and no matter how we threaten, the kids continue to not listen. because, i am the one who usually prepares the dinners (and i try to be very mindful about our meals), i take so personally when the boys act out. i go from zero to rage in a second and desperately try to keep my mouth shut so that i don’t yell something terrible.
usually i fail.
it seems as though the kids only really listen when i yell and stomp my feet, which is so upsetting to me. we have obviously lost any power we ever had and the kids are in control.

but, things are changing and i have stomped by feet in anger for the last time. dear hubby and i are laying down the law in a heavy way, which is awful and hard, but hopefully the tides will change. hopefully we can all just eat dinner together. bear is really testing us and yesterday refused to eat anything. so, when 7pm rolled around and he complained about being hungry it was difficult to deny him, but a lesson had to be learned.

tonight, dear hubby was held up in the big city due to traffic issues, so i was alone with the two kids for dinner. i was expecting the worst after last nights fiasco, but the kids ate everything that was served to them and lion even asked for more soup. we had an unusual pajama dinner, as lion was quite sick today with a bad cough and a fever, but by dinner most of the symptoms seem to have subdued.

look at this smile!

whew! so glad we ended the day on a positive note. dear hubby came home to two little dudes who were so happy to see him.

a cloth bum.

April 17, 2012 by mama lola

i’m spring cleaning and getting rid of stuff. there is a local kids clothing swap coming this weekend, so i’m getting my bag of goodies ready to go.

then i started sorting through the diapering supplies. oh, my! we sure have accumulated lots of different kinds of cloth diapers and accessories over the past four years. we started using cloth right from the beginning with bear. his wee bum would get lost in all the fabric and folds of the diaper and he was more diaper than baby in those days! we’re still going strong with the cloth diapers on lion’s bum. many of the prefolds we were gifted for bear are so old and torn, so we had update and get some new ones (new ones meaning they’re second hand! new to us i suppose.)

i’m feeling ready to start potty training lion. it seems absurd on one hand, i mean, the wee dude isn’t even two yet! but, i think it’ll be easier with him than it was with bear. lion already wants to sit on the toilet and likes to talk about pee and poo. and with the warmer weather it’ll be easier, from what i remember, although it won’t be easy.

but back to the diapers. i feel quite happy and even proud that we can confidently say we cloth diapered two babes. that’s not to say we haven’t used disposables, because we have and i have no shame in admitting that. but, we are mostly a cloth bum family! it was and still is a commitment, but in the long run it’s better for the environment and better for your baby. cloth diapers have come such a long way too, even since bear was born four years ago. they just keep getting better and cuter!

looking at the small diapers in our basket, i am hit with waves of nostalgia and memories of my guys as tiny wee babies. bear, now four years and lion now 21 months, are far from babies. where did the time go?

i wonder if we will ever have a third… so much depends on what my neurologist and endochronologist say in july.

*****
today we went from this…

to this….

to this….

i am grateful today is almost done. now, off to the Y for my zumba and a break my guys.

way up in a tree!

April 15, 2012 by mama lola

we LOVE this little gem of a book!

the renowned canadian writer, margaret atwood wrote a delightful chidlren’s book called “up in a tree” (1978). our boys love this book and bear can read it to his little brother now. when we went to the park with friends on friday, the big kids found a tree they could climb on their own and it reminded me of this book.

look at these cute dudes up in a tree! i have always encouraged my kids to climb, because it is helpful skill to have and i think it has helped shape bear’s confidence.

the missE enjoyed her first spring swing and loved it. look at all the kids! Wweeeee!!!

today it has been raining all day, but nobody seems to mind. last week we played outside a lot and yesterday was a super busy day for all of us, so it’s nice to take it easy for a change.

are you enjoying a lazy sunday as well?
